Littmann Cardiology IV vs Master Cardiology: Two-Sided or Single-Sided?

Short answer: Both are top-tier Littmann cardiology stethoscopes with dual-lumen tubing, stainless steel chestpieces and a 7-year warranty. The difference is the chestpiece: the Cardiology IV has two tunable sides (adult and pediatric), while the Master Cardiology has one large, tunable side of about 5.1 cm. Choose the Cardiology IV if you also examine children or thin patients often; choose the Master Cardiology if you mainly examine adults and like a single-sided chestpiece.

What is the same on both?

Both use dual-lumen tubing: two sound channels inside one tube, so there is no rubbing noise between the channels. Both chestpieces are stainless steel and use Littmann’s tunable diaphragm, so you hear lower-frequency sounds with light pressure and higher-frequency sounds with firm pressure without flipping anything. The warranty is the same 7 years, the longest in the Littmann range. Read more on the tunable technology page.

The tube length is also identical at about 69 cm, and both are made for the same kind of work: frequent, careful auscultation of heart and lung sounds where small differences matter. In day-to-day use, the sound quality of the two is in the same class. What you are really choosing between is the shape of the chestpiece and how it fits the patients you see.

What does a single-sided chestpiece mean in practice?

With the Master Cardiology there is nothing to turn or index. You place the large diaphragm and adjust pressure to change between low and high frequencies. This suits fast, repeated adult exams, for example during ward rounds or in the ER. The larger surface of about 5.1 cm also covers more area on an adult chest.

The limit is size. On infants, small children, or very thin adults, a large chestpiece can be harder to seat well between the ribs. That is where the Cardiology IV’s smaller pediatric side helps.

The two-sided Cardiology IV asks for one small extra habit: making sure the side you want is open before you listen. It quickly becomes a habit. In return, you have an adult side and a pediatric side in one instrument, both tunable, so you can move from an adult patient to a child without changing stethoscopes.

Who is each model best for?

  1. Cardiology IV: residents and doctors in pediatrics, family medicine, ER or general internal medicine who examine all ages; nurses in mixed units; anyone who wants one steth for every patient type.
  2. Master Cardiology: internists, cardiology fellows and adult ICU staff who mostly examine adults and value a simple, single-sided chestpiece.
  3. Either: clinicians who want the longest Littmann warranty and dual-lumen acoustics.

If you are matching a steth to your field, the shop by specialty page groups models by use.

Does weight or price decide it?

The difference is small. The Master Cardiology is about 8 g heavier (about 185 g versus 177 g), which few users notice. On price, the Master Cardiology range in our store starts slightly lower, at around ₱16,555 versus around ₱17,346 for the Cardiology IV, as of November 2026. Prices can change, so treat that as a small factor next to chestpiece design.

How should you decide?

Think about your patients over the next few years, not just this rotation. With a 7-year warranty on both models, the steth you buy as a resident may still be with you as a consultant. If there is a realistic chance you will examine children, a two-sided Littmann Cardiology IV is the safer choice. If your work is clearly adult-focused and you like simplicity, the Littmann Master Cardiology is a strong pick. If you are still deciding whether you need a cardiology model at all, our Classic III vs Cardiology IV comparison helps, and the Littmann Knowledge Center covers the full range.
