What Is Tunable Diaphragm Technology?
Developed exclusively by 3M, tunable technology allows clinicians to control the frequency response of their stethoscope by changing pressure alone:
- Light pressure = Low-frequency sounds
- Firm pressure = High-frequency sounds
This feature is included in nearly all Littmann models (excluding some electronic, pediatric, and infant stethoscopes) and eliminates the hassle of turning the chestpiece or manually adjusting any components — unlike many other stethoscope brands.
How Tunable Technology Works
To Hear Low-Frequency Sounds:
- Gently place the chestpiece on the patient’s skin.
- This light pressure keeps the diaphragm membrane relaxed, amplifying low-frequency sounds such as:
- Heart murmurs
- Certain lung sounds
- Abnormal vascular noises
To Hear High-Frequency Sounds:
- Apply firmer pressure on the chestpiece.
- This restricts diaphragm movement, filtering out low frequencies and enhancing high-frequency sounds like:
